about FAOS Musical Theatre Group

A little bit of history

FAOS has been a part of Farnham life since 1928, the first show being The Mikado. Whilst the shows in the early decades were a mixture of operettas by such as Gilbert & Sullivan, the scope has broadened in recent years and FAOS now presents a range of all musical theatre, old and new, and always to the accompaniment of a live professional orchestra.

FAOS is proud to be affiliated to the National Operatic and Dramatic Association.

Who we are and what we do

FAOS members are people who have a passion for community, friends and family, and for putting on a show. We are singers, we are actors. We are dancers and seamstresses. We are carpenters and administrators. In all these things we are just local people with amateurs who commit ourselves to creating theatrical entertainment to the most professional standard we can achieve and we aim to include in our group all those who can contribute at a basic level in their field of interest.

Our membership decides which shows we will produce and then hands to the committee the task of bringing them to the stage, up to two years later. After we have held the auditions to cast the principal roles there are four or five months of twice-weekly rehearsals, often interspersed with a trip or two to the local pub, which then culminate in a single week twice a year when FAOS takes over the Great Hall of the Farnham Maltings.

There, over the course of little more than a day, we install the lighting, sound and set for our production, have our first rehearsal with the professional musicians where we get to hear a glimpse of our musical coming to life, and do a technical run of the show. After a dress rehearsal the following evening, it’s curtain up on opening night and the show’s five or six performances are under way!
